Wondering About NDIS and Mental Health Support? Let's Chat ...

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

It's only been around since 2020, so it's one of the newest NDIS support items available. It's quite the mystery for many but, for those it is designed for, it can play an important role in mental health recovery. Let's explore what it is, what it isn't, who it is helpful for and why.

A psychosocial recovery coach is an NDIS funded worker who has lived experience, learned mental health knowledge, or both. A recovery coach will:

  • spend time with you, and people important to you, to get to know you and understand your needs

  • help you to find out about different services and supports and how these may help you

  • help you get support from mental health services

  • help you better understand the NDIS and support you with the NDIS

The term ‘mental health recovery’ can be misunderstood, as it is often confused with the medical understanding of the word, which is often understood as ‘being cured’ or having no symptoms. A psychosocial recovery coach does not provide clinical support, as a psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist or mental health nurse would in a hospital or other community mental health service.

For people living with mental health conditions recovery is about a person’s whole life, not their illness or symptoms. It will mean different things to different people. A recovery oriented approach focuses on someone getting back control of their life, which may or may not include living with symptoms.
